There have been a few posts from time to time on ways of lighting your heatbeads, for use in the Cobb, for the
camp Oven, or any other apparatus using this type of fuel.
Thought I’d give a “review” on the latest gadget I have just purchased.
The Heat Beads® Quickstart
Chimney is a way of getting your Heat Beads® burning quickly and evenly.
I have in the past used things such as a gas burner, gas torch and mentholated spirits to speed up the process.
Well the Quickstart
Chimney really works. I only needed 8 beads to put in the Cobb, to
cook a lump of Pork we are having for dinner tonight.
The
chimney is suitable for the normal variety of Heat Beads® or the “Easy lites” I have been using, but which don’t light quite as easily after they have been opened for a while.
I placed two firelighters on a cake stand sitting in an old frypan, ignited them and placed the
Chimney on top. Went inside to prepare the vegetables which I placed in the Cobb’s moat. This process took about 15-20 mins. Took the Cobb outside and all 8 Beads were burning evenly with a coating of brown ash over them. With a pair of tongs, then transferred the Beads into the fire Basket of the Cobb, shoved the lid on it and am now sitting here writing this, sipping on a
Mitchell Peppertree Shiraz while waiting the hour and a half or so that dinner will take to
cook.
Yes, I know, another piece of camping hardware to cart around. But I just love “knick knacks”. With this device, I’ll be able to go back to the standard Heat Beads® which are cheaper than the Easy Lites, so I’ll recover the cost in Oh, a couple of years:-))
